The Project Management Institute (PMI) has compiled a list of the 50 most significant and influential projects of the last 50 years. It includes projects that have influenced their field and the world at large.
The winners were selected from more than a thousand projects submitted by 400 experts, including PMI members, as well as scientists and other experts. In addition to the main list, PMI published thematic selections that include architecture, space, entertainment, games, biotechnology, healthcare, finance and more.
1. The World Wide Web – for connecting everyone and everything
"Fuzzy, but fascinating..."
This is how Tim Berners-Lee, the head of the CERN publishing laboratory, described the concept of the World Wide Web project in 1989. Despite the uncertainty, the project was already underway, and two years later a virtual library of web pages and the first website were deployed. In 1993, the World Wide Web became public.

Anything less than flawless execution could have led to fatal consequences for the project – two years before the launch of Apollo 11, three astronauts died during a launch rehearsal.

Nearly every system and procedure required backups, and even systems that passed the test were subject to third-party audits. And a problem-solving matrix ensured that a troubleshooting protocol was in place for any scenario.
