We have already mentioned here a few times that many companies refer to data as the new oil, trying, with this analogy, to show the value that this type of information has. Data is extremely important and began to gain more visibility in Brazil with the approval of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD ) in September 2021.
What until now did not deserve much attention is beginning to gain relevance, to the point that today there is an area of knowledge dedicated to studying them: it is data science, as we will see in this content.

What is data science?
In a very simplified way, data science is the area dedicated to studying data and extracting insights from it that can help a company or organization make strategic decisions.
To do this, analyses and processes of statistics, mathematics, computer engineering and even artificial intelligence are combined to understand and use them in everything from politics to economics, including the area of health research, among others.
By analyzing information, it is possible to map behaviors, identify trends and even establish public policies based on them. Also known as Data Science, this science allows us to extract data and use it in the best possible way.
Let's take the case of Science, for example, in which there is metadata that must be analyzed and organized for proper interpretation, including by research from different areas of knowledge.
In the specific case of the development of the Covid-19 vaccine, data science undoubtedly helped to shorten processes as it left thousands of pieces of information in the hands of computers and ultra-modern systems that, if analyzed by human beings, would indefinitely delay the vaccine's arrival to us.
The same data science was used last year by the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina to develop a business intelligence (BI ) tool to monitor vaccination and detect cases of queue jumping.
Why is data science so important?
Few companies, due to lack of vision, understanding taiwan phone numbers or especially money, are able to measure the size of the data market. So-called Big Data has become an asset of significant commercial value.
A study presented at the Davos World Forum in 2019 revealed that sharing this information between companies from different countries could generate US$3 trillion in business . In the same way that it draws attention, the manipulation of this data is a concern for its owners.
However, although it is extremely important and strategic for decision-making, data mapping, organization and analysis are not always taken seriously by companies. At least that is what the Analytical Maturity Index, from the Cappra Institute , a research institute in Canoas (RS), found in 2020. According to the survey, the use of data here is not constant.
This neglect may be due to the lack of a culture of data use in the company or a simple lack of knowledge that, even without having a structured area for data science, it is possible, regardless of the size and resources available, to count on companies specialized in this market.
How did data science gain momentum in Brazil?
It is undeniable that the implementation of the General Data Protection Law in September of last year ushered in a new era of care with all types of information. From then on, companies began to have even more responsibility in the collection, processing, storage and use of customer data, as we will understand.
