YouTube blocks videos in Finland after failing to reach agreement with copyright agency

Post by pappu857 »

YouTube has had to block all music videos that contain content from Teosto , the local Finnish copyright agency. This is because the video platform has not reached a licensing agreement with the agency. As a result, users in Finland will not be able to access the vast majority of music videos from their country.

Teosto owns the copyrights of more than 30,000 artists who host their videos on the platform . Users who want to view one of their clips will find a message from YouTube when they click on them warning them that “the content you are trying to view is not available in your country.”

Not having obtained this license not only affects videos from several Finnish artists. It has also led to clips containing the Finnish national anthem being blocked .

As a result, Finns will not be able to stream their national anthem live on YouTube on December 6, the 100th anniversary of Finland's declaration of independence .

In addition, some users point out that not only videos that are registered by taiwan phone number Teosto have been blocked, but also clips with content from other countries. “This restriction is affecting random videos that are not related to Teosto, but are in the public domain ,” says one of the platform’s users.

In this regard, developer Alessandro Costa has created a Chrome extension that is capable of unblocking any geo-restricted video. Other users have also pointed out that by changing “tuve” to “pak” in the video URL, a similar window opens that allows you to watch the blocked video and even download it.
