ARU Junior Gold Cup Arrives

An exciting new initiative from the ARU has arrived in the Illawarra. Australian Rugby’s National Youth Competition for 2014, The Junior Gold Cup, will include 2 teams from the Illawarra. The national competition will include Under 15 and Under 17 teams from 24 zones Australia wide. The Junior Gold Cup (JGC) is a national long term talent development and competition program which has evolved from the Junior Gold Program of the last 2 years. A key part of Australian Rugby’s “Pathway to Gold”, this program will provide local Illawarra junior players with an opportunity to compete in a national competition while at the same time being able to participate in their local Club and School competitions.

Players selected for the squads will receive expert coaching phone number list highly trained and experienced local coaches with involvement from fulltime Australian Rugby Elite Programs coaching Staff. Players will also receive ARU designed Strength and Conditioning training, and an extensive Lifeskills Program promoting character development, respect and behavioral standards.

Open trials will be held for both squads and will be open to all young rugby players across the district whether from club or school programs. Training and playing apparel will be provided and with involvement in a truly national competition, our young players will have the opportunity to push for higher representative opportunities including the ARU’s National Gold Squad, State and National U20 Teams and ultimately Australian Sevens, Super Rugby and the Wallabies.



The Under 17 squad will be coached by Jay Tregonning and Phill Green with Tony Leeder-Smith and Chris Sellar in charge of the Under 15’s. Selection Trials will be held on October 15 & 16 and squad training will commence on November 4. Interested players must complete a Nomination Form which must be submitted by the October 11. Nomination forms are being distributed to all Illawarra clubs and schools and are also available under the ARU Junior Gold Cup 2014 Tab in the Resources section of this website.
