Survey among social media users
In week 51, people were approached via a call on Facebook and Twitter to participate in a short online survey. In total, 95 social media list to data users took the trouble to fill out the questionnaire, just before Christmas. Their answers show the following:
1. A social login is rarely used
If a website offers the option to log in via a social media account, then surprisingly little use is made of this. More than half (60%) indicate that they rarely or never use a social login. Only 16% indicate that they do this often or always. For the users who do log in via their social account, the reason is clear: it is easy, fast and you have to remember fewer passwords. A few indicate that they do it out of curiosity or simply because they think there is no other option.
“It is easy and accessible, you don't have to deal with passwords that require a lot of administration.”
“I use a social login because otherwise you sometimes can't use an app or website.”
The biggest reason for not logging in via a social login button is striking: users do not want others to see where they log in. Users think that everything they do will be visible on their profile/timeline and they do not want that. They prefer to keep this private and they do not want to 'spamme' others with it. In addition, loss of control and distrust play a role. Users do not want the company or the social network to receive additional data that they do not want to release. A few indicate that they have doubts about the right to exist of the social network and therefore the right to exist of the account in question.
