Despite all the benefits of future 5G mobile networks, one must also take into account the warnings of security experts.
5G technology will deliver ultra-fast speeds and virtually no latency. Businesses are especially counting on 5G to allow them to run more bandwidth-intensive applications simultaneously.
But at the same time, as the InformationWeek portal rightly notes, security issues should not be ignored.
Problems Found in 5G Communication Standards
A team of researchers from Switzerland, France and the UK have identified problems with a 5G security protocol known as Authentication and Key Agreement (AKA). The flaws were uncovered using a tool lithuania whatsapp data Tamarin, which is considered the most effective for studying cryptographic protocols. AKA is a standard that is supported by the communications protocol developer 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
The type of AKA associated with 5G is supposed to ensure that the device and the 5G network can authenticate each other, supporting private data exchange and keeping the user’s identity and location secret. However, the researchers say that in its current form, AKA may not be able to do these things because the requirements it sets out are not precise enough.
The research team is confident that AKA will provide more security for 5G than 3G and 4G network protocols. However, there are some drawbacks. In particular, it is possible to detect the location of a phone in a certain area, although without revealing the owner’s identity. Moreover, AKA’s vulnerability could lead to another user being charged for using the 5G network incorrectly.
