Although I had the best intentions, this thinking ultimately got me into trouble and led to the inevitable: I was subjected to manual action for participating in link schemes .
I remember opening Search Console and reading this message. At that moment, I felt like a kid holding his hand in a cookie jar. My stomach was in knots. I had heard of people doing manual actions before but I didn't think it would happen to me.
In hindsight, this was probably one of the most pivotal azerbaijan number data moments of my SEO/development career. It calmed me down and made me think about outreach in a completely different light, and taught me the most important lesson to date: Link building isn’t about using automation to create a process that scales. It’s about building relationships — and value — that scales.
What did outreach look like in 2015?
I'm not surprised I got away from what I'd been doing for so long. From 2015 to 2017, it seemed like everyone and their mother was guest posting. During that time, I noticed this:
1. It was a numbers game.
Most of the SEOs I spoke to from 2015 to 2017 were using a similar strategy. It was all about finding tools that could help you scale your guest posting program and reach more people. Most companies had some arbitrary link quota for their outreach teams to hit each month, mine included.
2. It promoted somewhat decent content that was modeled after.
A Well... at least for a period of time.
