The rise of shadow generative AI is undermining efforts to use AI responsibly

The rapid pace of advances in generative AI is leading to the emergence of “shadow AI,” making it difficult to use AI responsibly, according to a study by MIT Sloan Management Review and Boston Consulting Group, ZDNet reports .

Every day, new AI platforms and tools emerge to help developers, data scientists, and business analysts. However, this rapid growth of new technology is also significantly outpacing the ability of AI systems to be responsible and accountable.

That's the conclusion of a recent survey of 1,240 azerbaijan mobile database executives published by MIT SMR and BCG, which looked at the progress of responsible AI initiatives and the adoption of both internal and external AI tools—what researchers call "dark AI."

According to the study's authors, Elizabeth Renieris (Oxford Institute for AI Ethics), David Kiron (MIT SMR) and Stephen Mills (BCG), the promise of AI has its consequences: for example, generative AI creates unpredictable risks for organizations that are not prepared for its wide range of applications.

Many companies have been caught off guard by the spread of shadow AI across the enterprise, the report’s authors note. Moreover, the rapid pace of AI advances is making it more difficult to use it responsibly and putting pressure on responsible AI programs to keep up.
