Retail is changing. Modern technologies such as mobile payments, multifunctional cash registers and cashless payment methods make sales easier and improve the shopping experience. In addition, the technical assistants can increase sales by opening up new sales opportunities.
Amazon sets the pace
Over four years ago, the technology company Amazon opened a supermarket in Seattle that does not have cash registers. Countless cameras cover every corner of the store and register which items customers take from the shelves and put in their shopping bags. When they leave the store, the purchase is automatically billed. To do this, customers must first register on a special platform.
Amazon is showing what is technically possible and is laos gambling data also considered a pioneer in the digitalization of retail. However, the development in the USA cannot be transferred 1:1 to Germany. Things will be different here for data protection reasons alone. Furthermore, cash continues to be a popular means of payment for Germans. The proportion of cash payments in stationary retail is just under 50%. Consequently, no retailer will completely do away with cash registers, as Amazon has done in Seattle. However, this cannot hide the fact that payment processes in retail are facing a modernization push.
A massive wave of modernization is sweeping German trade
The Cologne-based retail research institute EHI concluded in a study that 86% of the retailers surveyed want to modernize their cash register systems in the next two to three years. The main goal is to link digital payment options such as mobile payments with local stores. This requires that the cash registers in the stores settle the goods sold with the central warehouse systems.
