These are the results of a study by the Russian media holding Rambler&Co. Analysts asked Internet users what they spent their personal time online on in 2023, without taking into account work needs. The survey was conducted on Rambler&Co resources from January 1 to January 9, 2024. More than 200 thousand Internet users took part in it, including 51% men and 49% women.

Then they will have the opportunity for detox. The time spent online will not change much, but there will be a redistribution between different types of devices."
For 28% of Russians, the daily norm of time on the Internet in 2023 was two to three hours. For 23%, only an hour or two. 18% spent four to six hours on the Internet, 13% - more than six hours. Every tenth person claims that their browser was open all day, and 8% of respondents limited themselves to one hour.
Denis Kuskov, CEO of the TelecomDaily information and analytical agency, explained why people spend a lot of their free time online: "Indeed, people spend more and more time on the Internet every year, primarily in messengers. This is indicated not only by the research data, but also by the volume of data downloaded from the Internet. This is due to an increase in the amount of reading materials, heavy content, video content. In total, it comes out to an average of two to three hours of use per day."
Vadim Plesskiy believes that people spend on average more than two hours a day on the Internet: "The average commute to work in Moscow takes about an hour. Thus, two hours a day online for people commuting to work are guaranteed. If a person decides to watch a movie, then this is usually one and a half to two hours. The total typical consumption of Internet content and being online, according to this calculation, can easily be three to four hours a day."
38% of Russians surveyed made their first visit to the Internet immediately after waking up. 24% - at breakfast, 17% - on the way to work. 21% said that they used the Internet for personal needs only in the evening. Most often in 2023, Russians read the news - 49% of respondents reported this. 24% looked for useful information, 20% were entertained, 7% worked part-time on the Internet.
Vadim Plesskiy explained that depending on the type of device, users may have different work scenarios: "It is indeed convenient to view news and social networks from smartphones - in fact, this is the most convenient and enjoyable pastime for people who spend 30 minutes or more on public transport. The availability of Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE in the metro provides the necessary "transport" for data transfer. And it is more convenient to watch movies while sitting on the couch at home, on a large screen. At the same time, many users probably do not fully realize that this is also "access to the Internet" and "consumption of online content."
"The audience of TelecomDaily increased in 2023 compared to 2022. The time spent on the site also increased, despite the fact that the publication is narrowly focused and not suitable for every reader. In general, of course, the main focus remains news, video content on various resources and long content in online cinemas," said Denis Kuskov.
Almost half of Russians (47%) accessed the Internet via smartphones. Only 30% and 18% used personal computers and laptops, respectively. The least popular gadget was the tablet (5%). "Here we see a flaw in the survey. A huge number of people go online in another way - by viewing content in online cinemas. According to open sources, in 2022 (there is no data for 2023 yet), the number of subscribers to Yandex Plus services in 2022 was about 19.3 million. Yandex Plus includes a subscription to the Kinopoisk service, the share of which was 24% at the end of 2022. Thus, the total number of online cinema users in Russia can be estimated at 70-80 million. It is obvious that the question "What device do you use to access the Internet?" is outdated in modern realities. Users go online from smartphones, computers, via smart TVs and TV set-top boxes," says Vadim Plessky.
Russians who often take a break from the Internet named the types of leisure activities they freed up time for. 28% walked more, 24% took up their favorite hobby, 20% read printed books, 14% met with friends and family, 4% went to the cinema, theater, and concerts. At the same time, every tenth person found it difficult to answer and could not remember what they spent their free time from the Internet on in 2023.
