In the period that followed, other devices came onto the market that gave consumers access to the internet. Almost every Dutch person also had access to the world wide web at home. Two thirds of the Dutch shopped online between 2004 and 2009, with social media use and web shopping becoming increasingly important online activities. In the retail world, online competition increased, as web-only companies experienced strong growth. Turnover via the internet increased, at the expense of turnover via post/telephone. Websites became more interactive, contained more extra services and retailers increasingly used social media.

Full-fledged sales channel and multi-connectivity
In the period from 2009 onwards, the use of desktop PCs decreased, while the use of all kinds of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets increased. As a result, the use of mobile internet also increased and the internet eventually became the most important orientation channel for purchases. A number of traditional retailers experienced strong growth with their online sales, while sales via post and telephone were almost completely replaced by the internet. Online turnover accounted for more than ten percent of the tota list to data l retail turnover in this period.

This evolution of internet and e-commerce in the Netherlands naturally also has its consequences for the brick and mortar stores and shopping areas. Especially in the categories holidays, erotica, hard- and software and consumer electronics it appears that more and more is being oriented and bought online.
