Why does my business need an MEV?
If you operate a restaurant or bar, or if your business provides catering services, Revenu Québec requires you to use an MEV in order to comply with tax standards.

The MEV records sales and the taxes collected on these sales. The MEV helps Revenu Québec reduce instances of fraud and tax evasion.

As a business owner, it is up to you to ensure that your MEV is compliant and functioning properly at all times. You can find more information about installing and using the MEV on the Revenu Québec website .

What is a MEV?
The MEV is essentially a small computer. It must contain the software provided by Revenu Québec, and this software must be subject to all necessary updates. The MEV is connected to your point-of-sale (POS) system or cash register. It is also connected to your receipt printer.

The MEV:

Receives data relating to your business operations;
Save this data securely;
When it comes time to print the invoice, transmit the necessary information to the receipt printer.
There are several different models, but a MEV looks like this:

What is MEV-WEB?
It is a cloud-based system that validates and stores data continuously, and transmits it securely and offline to Revenu Québec.

It replaces the physical MEV.

How does MEV-WEB work?

A sales recording system (SRS) certified by Revenu Québec collects your business’s transaction data. When you make a transaction, the SRS transmits the data to MEV-WEB, a secure cloud environment.
Your customer immediately receives an electronic or printed invoice. The printed invoice also displays a QR code, while the electronic invoice includes a hyperlink.
WEB-MEV stores and validates data in the cloud in a secure environment.
The WEB-MEV data is then transferred to the Revenu Québec computer system, all in a secure manner.
Revenu Québec employees can now consult the data.
You can see the data that your company transmits to WEB-MEV by consulting “My file for companies” on the Revenu Québec website portal.
What does this mean for my business?
There are several advantages to moving from a physical MEV to a cloud-based one. Thus, companies with a WEB-MEV:

No longer required to submit a sales summary each month;
Can offer electronic invoices to customers;
Can view their business transactions by consulting “My business file” on the Revenu Québec website portal;
No longer need a physical terminal to remain compliant with Revenu Québec tax regulations.
I am about to open a bar or restaurant in Quebec. Do I need a MEV-WEB for my business?
If you are opening a bar or restaurant in Quebec on or after November 1, 2023 , yes. You need a MEV-WEB for your business.

If you own a restaurant and have no plans to open new locations, you must still obtain a WEB-SRM by May 31, 2025.
