The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology published GOST R 71657-2024 "Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Education. Functional Subsystem for Creating Scientific Publications. General Provisions". It was developed by Volgograd State University, and Technical Committee No. 164 "Artificial Intelligence" was involved in its introduction.
The new standard "establishes afghanistan whatsapp number database general provisions for the implementation of a functional subsystem at the stages of creating scientific publications in the field of education and science, including with the involvement of students, and also describes artificial intelligence systems designed to ensure work." In other words, it contains rules for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in writing scientific papers, requirements for data protection and recommendations for risk management.
"The provisions of this standard describe the use of AI systems to improve the productivity of scientific publications. The use of AI systems should be carried out in an ethical manner and should not replace creative human research activities," the document says.
The standard allows the use of AI at the stages of collecting initial data, analyzing scientific publications in the subject area of the publication and formulating its title, writing a study and choosing a scientific publication for publication, formatting the text according to the requirements of the publication, its subsequent promotion and monitoring. However, the text of the standard does not allow the use of AI as an author of scientific publications; its use is limited to collecting and registering information resources, storing and updating them.
At the time of publication of the material, representatives of the press services of TK No. 164 and VolSU did not answer questions from a ComNews correspondent.
"In terms of normative and technical regulation, standards (GOSTs) for the implementation and use of AI in various fields are currently being used in Russia. They were formed, among other things, for the implementation of a number of experimental legal regimes, for example, in the field of healthcare, which have become the driver for the development of the regulatory framework around AI," said Anna Smirnova, Director of AI Technologies at K2 Tech LLC, in a conversation with a ComNews correspondent.
She said that the attitude towards artificial intelligence in the academic environment has changed. If earlier the use of AI in writing scientific papers was considered unethical, now artificial intelligence has taken over the routine part of the research.
"AI is capable of collecting and systematizing information from various sources, structuring notes and drafts, and helping with text work. However, generating ideas, checking facts, formulating conclusions, and evaluating results is always the intellectual work of a scientist, which AI cannot do for a person. Considering that one of the significant problems of large language models is their tendency to hallucinate, producing irrelevant or fictitious content, the final responsibility for checking facts and data lies with the researcher," concluded Anna Smirnova.
The new GOST will come into force on January 1, 2025.
