Social media. Some people think it’s a waste of time. Others can’t check their accounts often enough. But how often are social media users active on the websites? And which platform is the most popular? In this edition of the Infographic Day series ; the time we spend on social media.
Social media popular while watching TVlist to data
In this infographic, weblog Socially Aware has created an overview of the time we spend online. The figures are about American users, but you may recognize your social media use in these statistics. The visualization shows that Americans have been using social media more since 2006 and have been maintaining physical contact less often.
The World Wide Web is also popular during offline activities: over 60 percent of American tablet owners surf the web while watching programs on television. Visiting social media while watching television is also popular. More than half of women and 44 percent of men check their social networks while watching television programs.
Furthermore, the figures show that social media now accounts for 18 percent of the time Americans spend online. Since 2006, the average person’s time on social networks has more than doubled. More and more Americans are using social media: in 2008, 24 percent of all Americans had a social media account; in 2012, this percentage had grown to 56 percent.
Americans spend the most time on Facebook . The average Facebook user spends almost 7 hours per month on the network, followed by Tumblr and Pinterest (both 1.5 hours). The average visitor to Twitter , LinkedIn and Google Plus spends less than half an hour per month on these social media sites.
