You have a great ranking on Google and people are coming to your website in droves.

But this begs the question: do they stay?

A high number of website impressions in search engines doesn't mean much if you have a high bounce rate. If people are leaving your website, it means they are not converting.

You might be asking yourself – I have great content and amazing products. Why aren’t people staying?

It could be your user experience. If your website is cluttered, complicated, or messy, people are more likely to leave.

What is bounce rate?
A lot of people think that if someone comes to your website and quickly leaves, it counts as a bounce, but that's only partially true.

Google considers single-page sessions where the visitor does nothing other than leave as bounces. The time on page will register as zero seconds because the visitor has not taken any action other than signaling Google's bots to help track time.

So how is the bounce rate calculated?

The bounce rate for your website (or your entire site) is the total number of visits to a single page divided by all visits.

Let's say a particular landing page was visited 200 times in a day. Of those 200 visits, 50 took another action on your site. They clicked on your call to action, played a video, signed up for your newsletter, or clicked on something in your navigation bar .

This means that the remaining 150 left without doing anything, leaving those with an average bounce rate of 75% .

Depending on your industry and the purpose of your website, this could be a pretty high bounce rate - or it could be average.

What constitutes a good and bad bounce rate?
Like we said, a good bounce rate means different things to different companies. It also depends on what you want to get out of your website or specific page.

As of September 2023, the overall average bounce rate for various e-commerce industries worldwide is 38.7% .

Statista further broke down the average bounce rate by industry category. Sadly, the health and beauty sector took the lead with a bounce rate of 51.6%. Electronics and home goods followed closely behind with average bounce rates of 46.6% and 41.6%, respectively.
